3 Techniques that will help lower the cost of your honeymoon;
1. If hosting your wedding at a hotel, negotiate 4-6 nights free at other hotels in the chain. This can significantly help defray the cost of your honeymoon by using your free nights. Many of the big chains offer this such as Hyatt, Marriott and Starwood. If they do not offer honeymoon free nights then feel free to ask about anniversary stays.
2. Airline Miles strategy or Credit Card Points Redemption; If you are planning to pay for some of your wedding costs, especially your dress and venue with a credit card, make sure you research the best card that can help lower the cost of your honeymoon. Chase Sapphire Preferred is one of my personal favorites as it provides you the most flexibility for redemption (great deal for travel redemption – 20% less points needed or 1-1 transfer to specific airlines/hotels) and most importantly if you are honeymooning outside the US it will not charge you foreign exchange fees. Make sure you take advantage of a signup bonus which can pay for your flights alone! The Points Guy (http://thepointsguy.com/) is a great resource for more information on how to best optimize your credit card spend for airline miles and free hotel nights! It is a little more work but it can go a long way! If you are someone who travels for work this could be the perfect opportunity to cash in your SPG or Marriott points and utilize your AA miles or JetBlue points.
3. Honeymoon Registry – If you are currently living in a city in a condo or an apartment and already nervous about storing all of your gifts until you buy your first house in the suburbs then a honeymoon registry could be the perfect solution for you. Some of the more popular sites are honeyfund.com and honeymoonwishes.com. These sites allow wedding guests to purchase specific activities on the trip, meals, spa treatments, etc but also allows them to make a Trip Contribution which can be used for any expenses.
